Quantum mechanics is the science of the very small: the body of scientific principles that explains the behavior of matter [‘matter’ is anything which occupies space] and its interactions with energy on the scale of atoms and subatomic particles. ‘Quantum’ means the minimum amount of any physical entity involved in an interaction. In simple terms ‘Quantum’ means very small, that can be viewed at nano scopic scales and not visible to human eyes.
The great scientists of this world Albert Einstein, Neil Bohr and few other scientists had done various experiments to understand the behavior of matter at the tiniest level. Albert Einstein by his experiments discovered that the core of anything existing in this space [ie. Universe, that is numerous galaxies, planets, stars, sun, etc.] is pure energy in the form of particles [ie. in solid form]. He discovered in his experiments based on certain assumptions that the matter [ie. anything in the Universe that occupies space, that includes all living and non-living things] at its nano scopic level is pure energy in the form of particles and this was explained by mass – energy equivalence equation E = MC^2 which we all have learned in schools. This equation explains that the mass, if combined with light speed squared is equal to pure energy. This can be explained in simple terms as below:
For human beings:
Universe [includes all living and non-living things] –> Human Body [Human beings on earth and other planets which are in the Universe]–> Body Organs [Human body is made up of different body organs] –> Tissues [All body organs are made up of tissues] –> Cells [Tissues are made up of millions of cells] –> Molecules [Cells are made up of millions of molecules] –> Atoms [Molecules are made up of numerous atoms] –> Sub atomic particles [Atoms are made up of sub-atomic particles like electron, proton, neutron] –> Pure Energy [Sub-atomic particles like electron and proton are electrically charged particles]
The above explains that human beings as well are pure energy in its core. Human body is made up of millions of atoms. In an atom, the electrons [negatively charged particles] move in an orbit around a nucleus [nucleus is a group of proton and neutron, of which proton is positively charged particles and neutrons are neutral particles that is without any electric charge. The above composition is about human body and the same applies to non-living things also. Any matter in this universe is comprised of positively charged and negatively charged particles [protons, electrons] and neutral particles [neutrons]. Einstein further studied the behavior of these electrically charged energy particles when they come into contact with light [photons, X-rays, gamma rays, ultra violet and infra red radiations, thermal radiations etc.] and magnetic fields.
Few of the other great scientist, Neil Bohr, Heisenberg and others studied the matter and their behavior when exposed to the light and magnetic fields, famous as ‘Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics’ discovered that the matter at its sub-atomic level [i.e.. the smallest level] is in wave form rather than particles form. The discoveries of Einstein and ‘Copenhagen interpretation’ were different for the same issue and were debatable, however it was later confirmed that the matter at nano-scopic level is in wave forms and later when observed would change its form into particles [ie. solid form]. Quantum mechanics was much researched at various level by various scientists and there were lot of theories and discoveries that came up giving different views on the study. The reason of the different results of the experiment of the same matter was ultimately known in later experiments carried out by other group of physicists, where it was discovered that how a beam of electrons is affected by the act of being observed. The experiment revealed that the greater the amount of “watching,” the greater the observer’s influence on what actually takes place. In simple terms, the sub-atomic particles behaved according to the observer’s observing. It was then understood that the matter at its sub-atomic level took the form of particles when the scientists observed the matter under a micro-scope thinking that it as particles and similarly those scientists who saw thought of them as waves, for them the matter took the form of waves. So according to the thoughts of observers who is watching the matter, the matter took the form or we can say matter behaved according to the observer’s act of observing. The scientists, members of the Condensed Matter Physics Department, work at the Institute’s Joseph H. and Belle R. Braun Center for Submicron Research.
When a quantum “observer” is watching Quantum mechanics states that particles can also behave as waves. This can be true for electrons at the submicron level, i.e., at distances measuring less than one micron, or one thousandth of a millimeter. When behaving as waves, they can simultaneously pass through several openings in a barrier and then meet again at the other side of the barrier. This “meeting” is known as interference.
Strange as it may sound, interference can only occur when no one is watching. Once an observer begins to watch the particles going through the openings, the picture changes dramatically: if a particle can be seen going through one opening, then it’s clear it didn’t go through another. In other words, when under observation, electrons are being “forced” to behave like particles and not like waves. Thus the mere act of observation affects the experimental findings.
To demonstrate this, Weizmann Institute researchers built a tiny device measuring less than one micron in size, which had a barrier with two openings. They then sent a current of electrons towards the barrier. The “observer” in this experiment wasn’t human. Institute scientists used for this purpose a tiny but sophisticated electronic detector that can spot passing electrons. The quantum “observer’s” capacity to detect electrons could be altered by changing its electrical conductivity, or the strength of the current passing through it.
Apart from “observing,” or detecting, the electrons, the detector had no effect on the current. Yet the scientists found that the very presence of the detector-“observer” near one of the openings caused changes in the interference pattern of the electron waves passing through the openings of the barrier. In fact, this effect was dependent on the “amount” of the observation: when the “observer’s” capacity to detect electrons increased, in other words, when the level of the observation went up, the interference weakened; in contrast, when its capacity to detect electrons was reduced, in other words, when the observation slackened, the interference increased.
Thus, by controlling the properties of the quantum observer the scientists managed to control the extent of its influence on the electrons’ behavior. The theoretical basis for this phenomenon was developed several years ago by a number of physicists, including Dr. Adi Stern and Prof. Yoseph Imry of the Weizmann Institute of Science, together with Prof. Yakir Aharonov of Tel Aviv University. The new experimental work was initiated following discussions with Weizmann Institute’s Prof. Shmuel Gurvitz, and its results have already attracted the interest of theoretical physicists around the world and are being studied, among others, by Prof. Yehoshua Levinson of the Weizmann Institute.”
All the above discoveries explains that quantum mechanics studies done by various scientists gave results according to their individual thoughts and observations. The matter is energy and this energy at its tiniest level takes form as per observer’s act of observing.
